Carignan, cultivated in Languedoc and in the south-east of France, is considered the largest crop of all the world. It is also known as Carignano in Italy, Carignane in the U.S. and Carigneña or Mazuela in Spain. It is also found in Argentina, Chile, China, United States (California), Mexico and South Africa. Some people believe that it actually from Cariñena, in Aragon. It is a suggested variety in Aragon, Catalonia, the Basque Country and La Rioja, and is authorized in Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Navarra. The grapes are blue-black, round and quite large, with a very thick skin, and very astringent, with large and compact clusters. The wines it produces have a good colour, acidity and tannins, with a flavour and aroma reminiscent of red berries and rose and violet petals. it does not have anu distinctive flavours, except in the few cases where it is selectively managed. Therefore, it is mostly a wine for everyday consumption or to blend with other wines, which uses both carbonic maceration and oak aging.
