The Johns Lane Distillery was opened by James Power in 1791. Now, the whiskey that was named after him is the most popular brand of whiskey in Ireland. A classic Irish whiskey Powers Gold Label is made with the single pot style of whiskey, which in itself is uniquely Irish.

To begin its Powers Gold Label whiskey, a mash of both malted and unmalted barley is put into traditional copper pot stills. This mix goes through three distillations before being matured in American oak casks for five to six years. These casks are mostly of second and third fill, to make sure that the wood still has a lot of colour and flavour to impart to the distilled spirit. After ageing, the product is blended with a grain whiskey to craft a unique flavour that has had whiskey lovers coming back for more than 200 years.

This is a complex whiskey that is best enjoyed neat. The flavour is a mix of cinnamon, oak, vanilla, and fruit from the orchard, finishing with the rich taste of barley and a touch of honey. While this whiskey is meant to be savoured alone, it is also excellent for mixing. Try Powers Gold Label as part of a classic Old Fashioned cocktail. This bold whiskey is an Irish favourite for good reason!

Powers Gold Label

  • Colour: Powers Gold Label has a warm golden hue.
  • Aroma: Spicy notes of cinnamon, clove, and white pepper are beautifully balanced against sweet, ripe orchard fruits, with a hint of charred oak beneath.
  • Taste: Wonderfully smooth and complex. Russet apples and ripe pears are enhanced by cinnamon, green pepper, nutmeg, and vanilla, into a long finish of barley and toasted oak with a touch of honey that lingers.

PRODUCER: Irish Distillers, part of Pernod Ricard. Powers was founded in 1791 when James Power established a distillery as an adjunct to his public house in Dublin. The first Irish whiskey ever to be sold bottled, Powers Gold Label remains the brand's proudest production, though no longer its only product. There was Powers family ownership of the company until 1966.

COUNTRY: Ireland

PRODUCTION DETAILS: This style of whiskey is unique to Ireland, made as it is from a mash of malted and unmalted barley. The triple distillation in traditional copper pot stills is part of a process that uniquely draws on the very heart of the distillate; more top and tail is rejected to retain the very best portion for Powers Gold Label than with any other Irish whiskey. Then maturation in carefully chosen second- and third-use American oak casks lends the spirit yet more, and delectably spicy, character, before a masterful blend with fine grain whiskey.

- Power's is an Irish favourite with its fruity and spicy flavours giving way to a long lingering finish.
- John Powers and sons began production in 1791 in 1886 they were one of the first to start to bottle their whiskeys until then almost all drinks were sold from the barrel. Powers is probably the No1 Irish whiskey sold in Ireland.
- Originally a pure pot still it is now produced at the Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork as a blend of pot still and grain whiskeys.
