Speyside, in northeastern Scotland, is one of the country's five whisky regions. Thanks to its climate and pure water, the Speyside region is home to Scotland's greatest collection whisky distilleries. The Glenfarclas distillery, nestled at the foot of Ben Rinnes, is just one of these Speyside distilleries. It was bought in 1865 by John Grant, 150 years later, it remains in the hands of the fifth and sixth generations of the family. It is one of few Scottish distilleries to remain family owned and managed. The name Glenfarclas comes from the Gaelic and means "glen of the green grassland".

It is the mission of the Grant family to create the finest Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky in the traditional manner. To achieve this goal, Glenfarclas whiskys are twice distilled in direct fire stills, the traditional stills of the region. Glenfarclas 12 Year Old is aged for 12 years in hand-selected casks of European oak that were previously been used for sherry maturation.

For those who enjoy a sherried whisky, the full-bodied Glenfarclas 12 Year Old is a great example of its kind. It is best consumed neat or with a drop of water to let allow the flavors to linger in the mouth. This fresh and vibrantly light whisky is an excellent pairing for smoked salmon or Iberico ham.

Glenfarclas 12 Year old 1L

TASTING NOTES:

  • Colour: Glenfarclas 12 Year old 1L is a warm golden amber.
  • Aroma: Honeyed sherry with apple, oak, pine, and a subtle but alluring smokiness.
  • Taste: Delectable malted fruit cake and sherry flavours, with notes of toffee apple and pine forest. The long oaky finish has a gorgeous echo of mulled wine with an orange slice.

PRODUCER: Glenfarclas. While perhaps not one of the commercially famous ‘Glen' Scotch whisky producers, in fact the Glenfarclas distillery has been run by the same family since 1865. After all these years, the Grant family remains committed to producing the very best single malt whiskies in the traditional Speyside manner. Meltwater from the slopes of Ben Rinnes runs through granite and heather before ending up in one of six large direct-fired - not steam-heated - stills.

COUNTRY: Scotland

PRODUCTION DETAILS: Twelve years in 100% Oloroso sherry casks gives Glenfarclas 12 Year old 1L a gorgeous malty sherriness. Glenfarclas means ‘Glen of the Green Grassland', and indeed the fresh nose brings grasslands to mind, though the casking adds flavours of the forest. Glenfarclas 12 Year old 1L was deemed to be the Best Sherried Whisky at the Single Malt World Cup 2006, and won Gold at the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival two years running (2007 and 2008). Taken neat or with a drop of water, it pairs beautifully with prosciutto or smoked salmon.
