You will like to know that…

Bushmills whiskey received its license to distil from King James I in 1608. That makes it the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. Bushmills is such an Irish institution that, to celebrate the distillery's 400th birthday, the Bank of Ireland included the Old Bushmills Distillery on its banknotes.

The distillery still sits near the north coast of Ireland, next to the River Bush. It is in this scenic location that Bushmills Black Bush Irish whiskey is crafted. Malted barley is triple distilled in copper pot stills. Then, sweet, batch-distilled grain whiskey is blended with this malt whiskey before being put in Sherry casks to mature. The final result is rich, balanced, and incredibly smooth. Bushmills is one of few Irish distilleries to use malt in their blended whiskeys, making it unique.

Bushmills Black Bush is a classic staple to have on hand for any occasion. It is best enjoyed neat, or on the rocks. To pair it with food, try cheese, lamb, or smoked salmon. Coffee or dark fruit will bring out the inherent sweetness in this whiskey. No matter what you decide, enjoy. This whiskey has been around for centuries for good reason.

Description of Bushmills Black Bush

Bushmills Black Bush

  • Colour: Bushmills Black Bush is a dark amber with golden glints.
  • Aroma: Scents of citrus, nuts, raisins, and spice give a Christmas pudding vibe to the nose.
  • Taste: Dark and rich, a truly spicy, fruity, and velvety smooth mouthful, with delicious flavours of apple pie, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel, peach, rose, vanilla, and wood. A notably long finish remains spicy, with almost a liquorice echo in the closing notes.

PRODUCER: The Old Bushmills Distillery Co., located along the wild northern coast of Northern Ireland, is famously the oldest licenced whiskey distillery on the planet. It commenced production in 1608, and that's no lie. But Bushmills will tell you that it's not the best because it's the oldest, it's the best because it's the best. To this day, it carries out triple-distillation of malted barley in copper pot stills using the waters of the River Bush.

COUNTRY: Northern Ireland

PRODUCTION DETAILS: To craft Bushmills Black Bush , a remarkable 80% malt whiskey (to 20% grain whiskey) is matured for up to 8 years in casks formerly used for ageing sweet bourbon or Spanish Oloroso sherry. This results in a dark, sherry-influenced spirit which is neither too sweet nor too woody; in a depth of flavour and character which can be enjoyed as a sipping whiskey, but is versatile enough to add spice and interest to any number of long drinks and cocktails.

Old Bushmills Distillery

Old Bushmills Distillery

Bushmill's history starts in 1608, when King James I. granted Sir Thomas Phillips - landowner and Governor of Antrum - a license to distill. In 1784 the distillery is registered and the Pot Still becomes its trademark. The first big difference adds in the 1850's, when a malt tax is introduced. Because of this tax many distilleries changed their recipes, while Bushmill's didn't. The brand was unstoppable, although many obstacles - such as a big fire, prohibition and World War II - made life hard and decreased or even stopped production for a while.

Bushmills Black Bush

4 /5

- Black Bush Special Irish Whiskey is a rich, dark, 80-proof blend from the world's oldest licensed distillery, "Old Bushmills" distillery in County Antrim, Ireland.
It is comprised almost entirely of single malt whiskey, making it a choice selection of deluxe whiskey aficionados.
- Malt whiskey that becomes Black Bush is aged up to eleven years in selection sherry-seasoned oak casks before being blended with a small portion of a special single grain whiskey to enhance the independant, non-conformist character of the malt. The malt used in the mash derives its clean taste from the deliberate absence of peat used in the malted barley drying process.
- All of the Irish whiskey distilleries kiln-dry their malt in a heat-fired, not peat-fired, oven. This drying process lets the clean, clear taste of the malt and barley shine through. The combination is then returned to the cask for "marrying." As the whiskeys mellow together, the uniquely rounded bouquet, rich amber hue and distinctive taste of Black Bush is born.
Black Bush has a distintive, full bodied aroma with spicy, malty and nutty sweet sherry notes. It is complex and well flavoured, slightly sweet with clear malt notes that are not masked by smoke. It is a whiskey to be enjoyed straight or on the rocks.
