Ardbeg is located in the southeast corner of the Scottish island of Islay. In these 620 square kilometres, not only are there centuries of history, but there are also nine distinct active distilleries crafting whiskies in this protected whisky region. Islay has seen it all: Celtic monks, Norse Vikings, and illicit distillers. Now, the island's soft water, fertile soil, and ever-important peat are precious resources for the production of world-class whiskies.
The Ardbeg distillery was founded in 1815 when its founder John Macdougall received a license for this commercial enterprise. Even though the distillery has changed hands many times and has suffered two closings, like a phoenix, it always rises again, bigger and better. Ardbeg 10 Year Old was named World Whisky of the Year by the 2008 Whisky Bible. This single malt Scotch whisky is a beautiful combination of peat, smoke, malt, spice, and layer upon layer of flavour that is sure to please.
Naturally sweet, Ardbeg 10 Year Old is a light gold gem of a whisky that smells as beautiful as it tastes. The finish is almost neverending. It is so long and full of its own special set of flavours that you are going to want it to continue on and on, as Ardbeg has managed to do over the years. Thank goodness they are still around to provide the world with whiskies like this.
Description of Ardbeg 10 Year old 1L
Ardbeg 10 Year old 1L
- Colour: Ardbeg 10 Year old 1L is a warm, bright, liquid gold.
- Aroma: Glorious clouds of almond toffee, dark chocolate, golden fruit, graphite, peat, sea spray, tarred rope, and vanilla.
- Taste: A perfect marriage of black pepper, brine, cinnamon toffee, citrus, driftwood smoke, liquorice root, and vanilla. Ardbeg 10 Year old 1L is known as one of the peatiest whiskies available, but somehow, masterfully, that peat never overpowers, so that the atmospheres of orchard, oak, and ocean carry equal weight. The finish is notably long, and leaves you in a fantasy of sitting by a beach campfire at night enjoying sea-salted caramel.
PRODUCER: Ardbeg Distillery, located on the south coast of the isle of Islay, Scotland, in the Inner Hebrides islands, and producing whisky since 1798. The distillery is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and uses malted barley sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen. It has a notable output considering its use of only two pot stills.
PRODUCTION DETAILS: This single malt matures for a decade, and is not chill-filtered. Ardbeg 10 Year old 1L was recognised as the World Whisky of the Year in 2008, and remains one of the favourite whiskies of connoisseurs who enjoy peat and smoke balanced with their sweetness. A remarkably balanced expression of the essence of Islay and its natural environment.
To feel the true spirit of Ardbeg, visit the Distillery. Stand on the grassy mound that rises between the buildings and the sea. The sight of the pagoda roofs crowning white-washed walls before you; the sound of waves surging onto the rocks behind you; the smell of malt and seaspray all around you.More about the Producer
