Founded in 1870 by James Fleming, the Aberlour Distillery can be found at the point where the Lour burn joins the River Spey at the foot of Ben Rinnes, a mountain in northern Scotland. The water for the whisky is sourced from Ben Rinnes itself and the distillery uses nothing but locally-grown barley to craft its fine, single malt whiskies. In fact, all of the barley comes from within 15 miles of the distillery.
To make Aberlour 10 Year Old, after every shipment of barley is carefully inspected for quality. The barley and water are distilled in special stills with unusually broad bases. But, the secret to Aberlour's fine whiskies is its double cask maturation process. The whiskey is aged for a minimum of 10 years in two types of casks: Oloroso sherry butts and American oak barrels. The butts that were previously used for Spanish sherry in the Jerez region serve to add fruit, spice, and richness to the whisky along with a darker amber sheen. The American oak barrels come from traditional distilleries in the USA and add sweeter notes of vanilla and toasted coconut.
After the whisky has matured, the master distiller marries the two specially casked whiskies for perfect balance. Full-bodied with notes of spice and toffee, this Speyside single malt Scotch whisky leaves you with the lingering flavour of spices and caramel on the tongue. Try it with lamb, prosciutto, strong cheese, chocolate, or rich, creamy desserts like crème brûlée.
