Washington Denomination of origin has more than 13,700 hectares of vineyards, divided into three different wine areas: Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley and Yakima Valley. Here there are about 1,820 registered vineyards, although it was in the 1960s that the first commercial cultivars were established. All these hectares surround the Cascades Range.

Its first strains were Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but nowadays, its main strains for white wines are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Columbia Winery, Arbor Crest and Chateau St. Michelle are the three most famous wineries in the Washington DO. Owing to the hot days and its soil, the terrain of this DO is becoming one of the most suitable regions for the vine-growing.
