Maria de Moya 2016 (Merlot)
- View: Cherry red with garnet glints.
- Nose: Pleasurably aromatic, ripe black fruit forward and hints of cedar, figs, spices, tobacco, and vanilla.
- Mouth: Rich and intense yet fresh, fine-bodied and balanced, well-integrated tannins. Flavorsome black fruits with cocoa, toasted notes of leather and spice into the warm finish.
VINEYARD: Bodega De Moya extolls the vineyards of Valencia, its aim to capture the essence of the Spanish Mediterranean Levante while creating ‘affordable luxury': complex, rich wines at accessible prices. Vineyards are 850 meters above sea level on sloped hillside. Ecological Viticulture. Poor, sandy, pebbly loam. Vines of fifteen to forty years.
GRAPES: 90% Bobal, 10% Merlot
AGEING: Barrel aged twelve months in French oak (35% first passage).
PREPARATION: After vineyard selection at harvest, grapes are cooled to 4°C for 24 hours, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks and wooden casks. Fermentation and maceration of 26 to 34 days. Only free run wine is used. Bobal grapes were traditionally used for rosé wines, as perceived rusticity and difficult tannins were challenging for red production. However, the modern advantages of Bobal, including well-balanced pH requiring no adjustments during vinification; drought resistance; production of deeply coloured reds as a source of body and colour; and high antioxidant content, have led producers such as De Moya to eagerly overcome any challenges.
