Ornellaia Masseto Toscana 2016

The production philosophy focuses on a single goal: quality. Every choice then assumes great importance and requires absolute attention to detail. At no stage of the production process are allowed shortcuts: this is our way of working and that's how we get the best grapes according to the climatic characteristics of each vintage. In the analysis phase and harvest empirical evidence allows us to choose carefully the bunches to collect. The taste of the grapes allows to better evaluate the maturation of the tannins and the balance of clusters, to determine the best time to harvest and the vinification technique for the grapes of each plot. We submit the grapes in a dual selection: a first sorting table for the verification of the quality, then a second check for the removal of any residual vegetation. The grapes of each cru ferment separately, since each base wine contributes to the creation of the final blend, by virtue of the specific conditions of the vineyard of origin: combination of soil, climate exposure and of course the type of grape. Only after a year of barrel aging the base wines are assembled in compliance with the two main criteria: the expression of elegance inherent in the spirit of Ornellaia and vintage style. Half hidden at the foot of the hills near Bolgheri, Ornellaia is located a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. In the summer months, the cool sea breeze caresses the vineyards and the nearby olive groves, while in the winter the hills protect it from cold north winds. Ornellaia believes that a wine should be the most authentic expression of the terroir from which it comes, and right here, together with the maritime climate, the heterogeneous nature of the terrain of the marine estate, alluvial and volcanic creates a distinctive atmosphere where the varieties of red and white can give their best. The endless vineyard parcels are part of this unspoiled landscape as pieces of a larger mosaic, creating a work of extraordinary beauty, complexity and elegance in a unique place. Experience, expertise and determination have played their part in the enhancement of the quality and reputation of Ornellaia, but it's the same estate continues to be a source of inspiration, always suggesting new and exclusive ways to capture his great generosity.
Are perhaps the seven hectares where he was born, with that terroir well suited, the mosaic of small plots and its perfect affinity with Merlot? Will the Mediterranean climate, with breezes blowing from the sea by joining perfectly with the warmth of the sun? Will the passion and dedication that guide all those who devote their talents and skills to its birth, its growth, its development? It will be a commitment to excellence, the obsession with every detail? It will be the awesome complexity, its so beautifully balanced structure? His integrity timeless? Its extreme rarity? The value that manages to win every time, at international auctions? It will be a deep and true appreciation of his fans around the world? The answers to these questions are the keys that allow us access to the complex world of Masseto. But, beyond all explanation, much remains steeped in mystery, still leaving room for discovery, the wonder. Masseto is a very special wine, a wine that goes well beyond excellence. It represents a unique world, an extremely close range to the values embodied by the earth and the work of man. Top of the Masseto hill at an altitude of about 120 meters above sea level, the soil is composed of loose clays and sands rich in pebbles, a combination that has the ability to create very elegant wines.

It has a strong caramel smell. I didn't notice any aftertaste, but the taste was right.
It has the same quality as other red.

I had bought it on a wine tasting.
It revealed a very light colour. Great smell of chocolate coulant. Good acidity for my taste.
