Undiscovered plots with enormous potential. This is the founding basis of The Chocolate Block.

A meticulous work to achieve a red wine with an enormous concentration of colour, flavour and tannic structure. Most of the Syrah, red Grenache and Cinsault vineyards come from the Swartland area, a warm and arid land with vines that sink their roots deep into the subsoil.

The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards in the Franschhoek and historic Stellenbosch areas. The final composition of the wine is adjusted with each vintage to best reflect the vintage and the character of the vines that give this wine its charm and personality.

Description of The Chocolate Block 2019

The Chocolate Block 2019 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Viognier, Garnacha negra and Cinsault)

TASTING NOTES:

  • Appearance: Red.
  • Nose: Dark, intense and brooding with aromas of black cherries, cardamom, sweet tobacco, espresso and subtle whiffs of perfume.
  • Mouth: exceptionally complex, juicy palate with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves, and liquorice. The mid-palate is focused, lithe and elegant with very fine, cocoa powdery tannins. The wine is medium-bodied, very balanced with an earthy, layered character, covering the entire spectrum of berry fruit - from tart red plums to rich blue and black berries. The finish is svelte, clean and dry, peppery and lingering, with hints of dried cranberry, tar, graphite and smoke.

VINEYARD: Boekenhoutskloof

GRAPES: Syrah (71%), Grenache (11%), Cinsault (9%), Cabernet Sauvignon (8%), Viognier (1%)

AGEING: Syrah and Cinsault were matured in a combination of seasoned 2,500L French oak foudres and barriques. Grenache was matured in seasoned 600L demi-muids. Cabernet Sauvignon was the only component exposed to new French oak barrique. The elevage ranged between 13 & 16 months, dependant on component and vineyard parcel. 2414 barriques were selected for our 2019 vintage.

PREPARATION: Their winemaker, Marc Kent, is tight-lipped about how exactly this wine is made - but that only adds to its mystique. He tweaks the blend slightly with every vintage so no two Chocolate Blocks are quite the same.

PAIRING: Moroccan lamb tagine, spice-rubbed steaks, roast rib of beef, or game dishes.

ABV: 14.5%

Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block 2019

4 /5
