The Château d'Yquem is the only premier cru sauternes rated higher, it is considered the best sweet wine in the world. The estate covers 133 hectares, including 113 hectares are planted with vines but only 102 ha are exploited, other vineyards are still too young. Only two varieties are planted: Semillon (80% of the area) to the thick skin to resist decay, and Sauvignon (20% remaining) earlier. Yquem is distinguished by its ability to keep very long, the best vintages can be enjoyed over a century after the harvest. . .
