4 /5

Yquem is the only sauternes to be ranked superior first growth, it is hence widely recognized as the world's best liquorous wine. The Estate covers 133 hectares, of which only 102 are used for the wine, the other vines remaining too young. Only two grape varities are grown : semillion (80%) with a thick skin to resist the noble rot, and sauvignon (20%), with an earlier ripening. Yquem stands out with an unrivaled ageing ability, the best vintages being potentially drank a century later.

Reviews of other vintages of Château d'Yquem 1988020020199701991

Discovering Chateau d'Yquem stats with the bouquet. Although not always very outgoing in young vintages, it is marked by fruit (apricot, mandarin, and occasionally tropical fruit) and oak (vanila and toasty aromas). Older vintages, on the other hand, have extraordinarily complex fragrance as soon as the bottle is opened. The bouquet is amazingly suble, with hints of dried fruit (dried apricot, prune, stewed fruit, and marmalade), spice (cinnamom, saffron, and liquorice), and even flowers (linden blossom, etc).
The first impression of Chateau d'Yquem on the palate is always very silky, and often sumptuous. It then fills out, "coating the palate". This fine wine has a strong, but never overbearing character, with great elegance and poise. It always mantains a balance between sugar and acidity (sweetness and freshness). A touch of bitterness can also contribute to the overall harmony. Chateau d'Yquem aftertaste is legendary, and it tells another story, which lasts and lasts...

Chateau D'Yquem Sauternes Premier Grand Cru 2002

In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem was the only Sauternes given this rating, indicating its perceived superiority and higher prices over all other wines of its type. Yquem's success stems largely from the site's susceptibility to attack by "noble rot" (Botrytis cinerea).
