Cantine San Marzano lies in the middle of two seas: the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. This small winery, in the centre of Italy's "heel," was founded in 1962 when 19 winemakers joined together to make their dreams come true. The first bottles of wine were not released until 1996. Now the owner of a large portfolio full of Italian wines that have received accolades from all over the world, San Marzano is a name to know.
Just one of the fine wines from this collection is Il Pumo Negroamaro Salento. It is made using 100% Negroamargo grapes, whose name translates to "black and bitter." This dark-skinned grape is native to southern Italy and is known for its high level of tannins, dark colour, and the full array of dark fruit flavour it contains.
For its Il Pumo Negroamaro Salento, San Marzano ages the wine in stainless steel tanks. This allows the grapes to shine, without any notes from wooden casks interfering with the glorious flavour of this ancient variety of grape. A dark, purple-red wine, this is the perfect accompaniment for rich dishes such as meat, mature cheese, and so on. The full body and long finish make this a pleasant wine to enjoy on its own as well.

San Marzano Il Pumo Negroamaro Salento 2018 (Negroamaro)
- View: A deep violet with garnet highlights.
- Nose: An intense and brooding aroma of dark purple fruits and spicy herbal undertones like rosemary and thyme.
- Mouth: Velvety and full-bodied on the palate, with a robust and juicy flavour profile with some savoury undertones. Notes of blackcurrant, wild blackberry, black cherry, and dark plum harmonise beautifully with spices and Mediterranean herbs. A long and spicy finish.
VINEYARD: Cantine San Marzano
These negroamaro were grown in the Salento area of Apulia, Italy. This region forms the "heel" of the "boot" of Italy, extending into the Adriatic Sea. The climate is warm and Mediterranean, with a bit more humidity than most of Italy. The San Marzano lies about 100 meters above sea level and has primarily clayey soil with a good amount of rocks for rain drainage.
AGEING: Aged in stainless steel tanks.
PREPARATION: The grapes were harvested in the second and third weeks of September. The fruit is macerated in temperature-controlled tanks for 10 days, then fermented with selected yeasts.
PAIRING: Pairs well with full-flavoured main dishes such as steak, pot roast, game, venison, pastas with hearty meat sauces, and mature cheeses.
