Bodega Valdehermoso is a partnership between David Aguado (winery owner), Eva Lopez (winemaker) and Ignacio Alonso (vineyard manager/agronomist). Their 60 hectares of vines are planted to Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Viura at almost 800 m high on gravelly soil, with both clay and sandy subsoils, in the heart of the Duero river basin. The continental climate with thermal differences between day and night create the right balance between the ripeness of the grapes and its acidity. Their Lagar del Rey Verdejo is quinessential Rueda with its succulent core of white pineapple, lime zest, cut grass and sweet pears. Extended lees contact and a tiny amount (3%) of wine is aged oak, which lends a gentle creaminess and a fresh saline touch.
Robin Kick MW says "Rueda is one of Spain's freshest whites. But unlike some, it is not produced not by the seaside but truly in the centre of the country outside of Ribera del Duero on a 600-800 metre plateau. The higher altitude paired with its mineral-rich and sandy soils create a great synergy for producing fresh, lifted whites."
