Sierra Cantabria

The quality of the great wines is not a result of sheer luck. It requires personal effort, knowledge and passion as well of the earth and the complicity of the weather. Nothing is predominant, everything is important in order to create internationally famous wines. This is the result of hard work of a family with a philosophy that have been passed from generation to generation: to give back to the earth everything that it has given to us through the meticulous elaboration of our wines.

The Sierra Cantabria Rosé is a wine with the character and identity of the Sonsierra area in Rioja. Exquisite freshness, intensity and fruitiness. It offers a perfect balance and acidity. In the glass this is almost a Provence rose and very light salmon colored but has great aromatic notes of super fresh red fruit such as raspberry, a little strawberry, blueberry and sour red cherry, but we also smell some spiciness and mineral notes. The Sierra Cantabria rosé is very elegant and balanced on the palate. The wine is fruity but with good acidity and is nice and dry. An ideal wine that never gets boring and continues to surprise. This fantastic rosé is a blend of Viura (55%), Garnacha (40%) and Tempranillo (5%). We also carry many well-known (top) roses from Provence, but we dare to say that there are few (price in consideration) that can match this.

This beautiful rosé from the stable of Eguren comes from its own vineyards located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra DO. Rioja. There is sustainable cultivation (this applies to all wines from the Sierra Cantabria stable), so no chemicals and pesticides and only organic fertilizers. The yield is: 30 hls. / Ha which is well below the permitted yield, so quality over quantity. This fantastic rose is a blend of Viura (55%), Garnacha (40%) and Tempranillo (5%) which were harvested manually in the period from September 8 to October 2, 2019. The first selection is in the vineyard with a double selection on the sorting tables in the Bodega. The macareation for all three grapes is about 3 days, followed by a controlled fermentation at 16 degrees with cold stabilization. This is not a rosé which is made urgently and is really a wine with taste, elegance and freshness. We also carry many well-known rose's from Provence, but we dare to say that there are few (price considering) that can match this

The 2019 cycle started with a fall with normal rainfall, reaching 150 liters per square meter until the beginning of December, slightly below average. Winter was cold and with normal rainfall in December, January and February. In early March it was extremely dry and cold. April brought cool temperatures and the grapes gently sprouted. On the night of April 12, temperatures dropped below zero, causing some vineyards to be unevenly damaged by ice, especially the area of Páganos. At the end of April there were several days of rain, in the month about 70 liters fell. May started with a few nights close to zero degrees, with the night of the 5th being special, with some minor damage, especially in the higher areas. Flowering started in the last week of May in the earliest regions, and in early June in the higher elevations with varying dry and cold weather resulting in slow growth with relatively fewer grapes per truss than average. Temperatures rose in mid-June, triggering major vegetative development and accelerating growth. Late June brought high temperatures and, some days, storms; especially on the 28th, with hail and plenty of water in some areas doing some damage, but not big.

There was no significant rainfall until the end of July, with about 24 liters in San Vicente and 15 liters in Páganos. August was sunny and dry. However, due to the low production and balanced distribution of rain, the vineyards were in an exceptional state, without any symptoms of drought, so that the ripening of the grapes was close to the optimum In early September it was sunny, which brought high expectations due to the low production of the vines and the excellent phytosanitary condition.
The harvest for the white varieties started very early, between September 14 and 23, with very good health, high acidity and very good aromatic ripening. The reds were slowed somewhat by temperature drops in late September, beginning in the early days of October. In summary, 2019 was therefore a generally short harvest with small grapes of an excellent quality, which yielded very well-structured wines and, especially for the white and rose wines, this benefited the beautifully higher acidity than in previous years and with a great aromatic quality.
