TASTING NOTES OF 2010 Viña Pomal Gran Reserva:

View: bright cherry, garnet nuances.
Nose: complex and elegant, balsamic and liquorice notes and red fruits.
Mouth: Soft, round and well-balanced.

APPELLATION: Rioja.

Traits that characterize today the label of Viña Pomal Reserva like the hard forms of the typography, the frame in burgundy color or the illustration of the Winery, are already distinguishable in the product of the beginning of the 20s, always on its Burgundy type bottle. The harvest of 1930 incorporates on the label an element still present today: the seal that indicates the possession of the 10th registry of the Bottler Registry, the first and oldest in Spain. In 1954 the stamp of the then newly constituted Regulatory Council of Rioja, born to guarantee the quality level of Rioja wine under its control is also included.

Viña Pomal Gran Reserva 1978 se caracteriza por una vinificación tradicional. La uva seleccionada a mano en nuestros viñedos llega a bodega y es despalillada y estrujada para realizar una maceración moderadamente larga en depósito. Tras las fermentaciones alcohólica y maloláctica, los vinos son trasegados para ser criados en barricas bordelesas de 225 litros tradicionalmente de roble americano. El vino vuelve de nuevo a barrica clarificado con claras de huevo que ayudan a su limpidez y afinamiento, y pasa 1 año más en barrica para completar el proceso de crianza en madera de 225 litros. Tras su paso por barrica, el vino ensambla durante 6 meses en tinas de roble donde de forma natural termina de limpiar y de ensamblar todos sus componentes. Envejecimiento en barril americano de 5 años y de 5 años en botella hasta el primer lanzamiento al mercado. El descanso continúa en botella hasta hoy.

Vina Pomal Gran Reserva Rioja is made from the highest quality wines, a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, and aged for two years in American oak barrels followed by three years further maturation in the bottle. Deep, ruby coloured wine, with notes of red fruit including cherry and plum and backed by vanilla spice on the nose. Brilliant. Cherry-garnet colour of medium intensity. Brick red reflections. Elegant and intense. Appear red fruit and licorice aromas with maturity and AGEING: spices, snuff and vanilla leaf. Soft, round and balanced. A wine that denotes the origin of Rioja Alta and whose mix of varieties provides balance and freshness in the mouth characteristic of the wines of the area.

Smell of ripe fruit compote. According to my personal opinion, it was quite flat on the palate.
This wine is a classic.
