Bodegas Muga

Bodegas Muga is located in the historical Barrio de La Estación (railway station district) in Haro. The facilities (270,000 square foot) are two centuries old, built mainly of stone and oak. In fact, oak is paramount in the winery. There are 200 oak deposits as well as 14,000 barrels, made out of different types of oak ranging from French oak (Allier, Tronçais or Jupilles), American, Hungarian, Russian and even the small consignment of Spanish oak.

Muga - Aro 2009 is a very intense, black-cherry colour almost opaque, with dense robe and purple hues. It looks very young with little sign of evolution. Sensations of concentration and depth, with loads of nuances which will be heightened by the bottle ageing, and which will become more marked with the passing of time. Sensations of fruit to the fore, recalling red fruit and small, very ripe wild berries (blackberries, redcurrants, wild strawberries...), floral (violet petals) and mineral (graphite, iron) notes. Spicy hints of cinnamon and black pepper from the ageing. With the oak very well integrated which displays the high quality of the selected wood.

Potent structure on the palate, full-bodied with firm tannins of great elegance and quality, balanced by splendid acidity. It gives a sense of solidity with no cracks or sharp edges, hearty, with great balance and a sensation of freshness. Full of flavour, supple and broad ranging reminders of fruit, minerals and spices in the mouth aromas. The sensations on the nose are reproduced, but perhaps sharper and better defined. A long, full, elegant aftertaste.

Muga always use the finest materials and are open to new techniques that provide greater quality without losing authenticity. To produce each of their wines, they opt for traditional procedures like natural fining. The only cellar in Spain with a master cooper and three in-house barrel-makers, Bodegas Muga owns 620 acres of vineyards but it also has control over 370 acres owned by vine growers in the area. The vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses, within the area called Rioja Alta. The site climate is exceptional due to, on the one hand, the singular geography and orientation of the vines and on the other hand, the surrounding climates - Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climates are combined harmoniously thus creating a perfect climate for grape growing.
