TASTING NOTES:

  • View: D'Arenberg d'Arry's Original Shiraz Grenache 2015 has a deep but clear crimson red colour.
  • Nose: Earthy notes on the nose, with strong aromas of red cherries, and an undertone of plums and blackberries.
  • Mouth: Dry on the mouth with firm tannins and structure. Earthy flavour, with hints of plum, rhubarb, and blackberries. The finish is long and elegant.

APPELLATION: South Australia

VINEYARD: d'Arenberg winery. With a history that dates back to 1912, this vineyard is classified as organic and biodynamic-certified, and with the signature of using the conventional basket pressing method in the vinification of all the grape varieties. The Mediterranean weather that bathes this region of Australia favours the cultivation of red varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache, and Tempranillo, but top-quality products are also obtained for white wines.

GRAPES: 50% Shiraz and 50% Grenache.

AGEING: Twenty months in oak barrels prior to bottling.

PREPARATION: The grapes are separated in small batches and gently crushed before being transferred to open fermenters. Foot treading is implemented when the fermentations is two thirds completed. The wine is then pressed and stored in a mixture of new and used French and American oak barrels to complete the fermentation process. The wine is then left to mature, and the final blending occurs just prior to bottling, which is done unfiltered.

PAIRING: Ideal to accompany strong meat dishes, such as beef and venison.

RECOMMENDED SERVING TEMPERATURE: 15-18°C

ALCOHOL: 14.5%

- In honor of Francis "d'Arry" Osborn named wine was vinified in equal parts of Shiraz and Grenache and expanded some 20 months in oak barrels
- As usual with d'Arenberg, the grapes were pressed with feet, also the wine was not filtered
- Shiraz provides structure, earthy and spicy notes and plenty of dark fruit while Grenache contributes red fruit, soft tannins and charm
- Rounding out the wine from a fine roasted flavor and a very juicy, lingering finish
- Allergens: contains sulfites

- The depth of character on the nose is a feature with each subsequent sniff revealing something new. Dark, earthy Shiraz notes, complimented perfectly by fruit-driven, pure Grenache.
- The palate is equally rewarding. Rich and powerful, but not in an overbearing way. The blend of the chunkier Shiraz tannins, interwoven with the more spritely Grenache tannins enhances the texture of the wine. Flavours seem to flow infinitely on the palate and acidity is on point.

D'Arenberg The d'Arry's Original Grenache Shiraz 2015

4 /5

This wine displays a level of finesse and freshness that we don't always encounter in other vintages of the same wine. In a somewhat surprising contrast to this, the wine also displays a dense and varied array of fruit characters, from bright lifted purple plums and rhubarb through to more spice and herbal notes such as sage and cardamom, into even more complex earthy flavours of beetroot and soot. These flavours are perfectly supported by a frame of fine, minerally tannins that add a subtle grip and enticingly long finish.

- Dark with a slight purple tinge.
- The nose opens with raspberry, blueberry and plum stone with a layer of graphite and rose water, adding interest and elegance.
- The palate is darker with cherry and juicy plum, before dark chocolate, mocha and blackberry emerge.
