The denomination of origin of La Rioja is divided into 3 sub areas: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alta. In Rioja, vineyards extend over 56,000 hectares in 3 autonomous regions: La Rioja, Navarra and Basque Country.

There are distinctive differences of climate and soil in La Rioja, which do not affect the prestige of its wines. There are 3 types of soil, clay-calcareous soils, clay-ferrous soils and alluvial soils. The native red strain of the area is Tempranillo. It is the most famous one, but Mazuelo, Graciano and Grenache are also cultivated. Among the white strains, Viura, Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca stand out.

Red wines are aromatic and balanced; while whites are light, elegant and fresh. In Rioja, the wine is produced as follows: young wine (without aging), Crianza wine (2 years in the winery and at least 1 in a barrel), Reserve wine (minimum 3 years in the winery and at least 1 in barrel) and Grand Reserve wines (at least 3 years in the bottle and 2 in barrel). Some emblematic wineries like CVNE, Bodegas Domecq, Bodegas Faustino, Lopez de Heredia, Marqués de Caceres or Muga have helped the wines of this land to gain prestige in Spain or abroad.
