The wines of California wine region covers a large stretch divided into different climatic zones. The main ones are differentiated by the hours of sunlight and its influence in the vineyard. There is a total of five climatic zones that produce different varieties of very good wines, the most famous being the first and second ones.
California wines come from the following areas: the first one, along the north coast, south of San Francisco, the coolest of all; the second area, with a few hours of sunlight that range between 2,500 and 3,000, also in the north, and with features similar to the ones present in northern Italy; the third area is on the northwest coast of Los Angeles; the fourth, with over 3,500 hours of sunlight, with vineyards spanning from northeast of San Francisco to the Southeast of Monterrey, and the fifth area, with over 4,000 annual hours of sunshine, similar to North Africa or southern Spain, located in the Central Valley, Los Angeles and San Diego.
The strains grown in California include Chardonnay, Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc for white wines, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, among the red varieties.
