The vines grown in the vineyards of Alsace cover an extension of about a hundred kilometers along the foothills of the Vosges. This French territory has a sub-continental climate which is not too mild, with harsh winters and hot summers. The vineyard benefits from the low rainfall and dry weather, which allows the slow ripening of the grapes and the appearance of intense aromas.
The Alsace region has a variety of land types, so we can find clay and calcareous areas, siliceous and clay loam soils or even areas with granite or rocky soils. In many counties in this region there are several of these different kinds of soils.
In Alsace they use different strains. Among the white vines, we find Gewurtztraminer, Riesling, Tokay-Pinot Gray, Muscatell, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc or Chasselas. For red and rosé wines, the most common one is the Pinot Noir. It is easy to identify strains, since wines in Alsace are named after the strain they come from.
