Elaboration of Clos Fontà 2009
Clos Fontà 2009 (Carignan, Garnacha and Syrah)
- View: Clos Fontà 2009 shows an intense cherry cherry color with purple hues. Clean and bright. Nice and thin tear.
- Nose: The deep minerality of licorella appears from the outset to go slowly mixing with the heavy load of black fruit and some ripe red, spicy touches (cinnamon, coffee, cocoa, snuff) and balsamic refreshing.
- Mouth: In the mouth it is robust, powerful and in turn, silky and elegant. Have one step velvety mouth and tasty, meaty, where the ripe fruit is mixed, delicate roasted and minerality forming a balanced and harmonious whole. Good acidity and freshness. Feeling intense and ripe tannins. Very long and persistent. Excellent red wine, with a large concentration of flavors and aromas, powerful and with a great ride.
PAIRING: Grilled red meats, stews, civet, roasts, small game, big game hunting, white meats with sauce.
CELLAR: Mas d'en Gil
GRAPES: Hairy Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Carignan
In 1998 the family Rovira Carbonell, a long tradition and experience in the Penedès wine acquires "Masia Barril", which was the first winery bottling wines under this appellation. This farm, historic Priorat, had also belonged to the family of Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol until early this century. Recovers the original name of the farm: "Mas d'en Gil" and works to preserve its balance and rich natural environment. A year later, in 1999, also acquired the property adjoining the "Sas" and setting the current 125 hectares that make up the property with vineyards, olive, hazelnut, almond trees and typical Mediterranean forest.More about the Winery
The nose of the 2009 Clos Fontá screamed slate and Priorat. This powerful wine was born in 1998 as a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha Peluda and Garnacha País (different strains of Garnacha) selected from their best estate vineyards and fermented in small oak vats by plot. After malo the wines are blended and put in 225- and 1,500-liter oak vats to mature for some 14 months. Wet slate, ripe plums, spices and peat aromas dominate the nose. The palate is full-bodied and ripe, true to place and vintage, a powerful red for the long haul that is still in need of some more time in bottle and/or powerful meat dishes. I'd still wait a bit more.View more
