Description of Messias Tawny

Messias Tawny (Tempranillo, Tinta Amarela, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Çao)

  • View: Messias Tawny has a warm, reddish-orange hue.
  • Nose: Complex and autumnal aromas of stewed fruits, with jammy notes of blackberry, caramel, and vanilla pods.
  • Mouth: Highly complex and smooth, with flavours of coffee, dried fruits, redcurrants, and toasted nuts, into a slightly warm and woody finish.

VINEYARD: Messias. Messias Baptista was first registered as an individual merchant at the Tribunal do Comércio de Anadia in 1926. Given its polish, professionalism, and pride, you just know that this fine producer started preparing for its centenary celebrations shortly thereafter.

GRAPES: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão

AGEING: Maturation in oak casks prior to bottling.

PREPARATION: A Bronze Medal winner in the Japan Wine Challenge. Fermentation with partial destemming takes place at a controlled temperature of 24-28ºC, and is interrupted by the addition of brandy to retain some sugar for enrichment and fortification.

PAIRING: [[1] is a gorgeous accompaniment to cheeses, particularly strong and blue cheeses like Pecorino, Roquefort, or Stilton. It complements certain rich savoury meat and fowl dishes like Duck Pancakes or Beef Carpaccio. You might also enjoy it alongside creamy but less sweet desserts, or roasted chestnuts and other nut-based post-dinner treats.

Caves Messias
Caves Messias is a historic family owned producer renowned for their colheita and vintage ports. Founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista, the company has remained a family owned business up tol the present day. The most famous estate is Quinta do Cachão which has its slopes adjacent to the River Douro, in the subregion Cima Corgo. The vineyard was first planted in 1845 by the Baron Pebble sendomais and later acquired by family Afonso Cabral, who in turn sold it to Messiah family in 1956. In order to increase production capacity, Messias acquired another adjoining property, Quinta do Rei, then belonging Gonzales Byass.
