As it matures in cask, Tawny Port gradually loses the deep red 'ruby' colour of youth and takes on the seductive amber hue known as 'tawny'. At the same time, the wine becomes progressively smoother and mellower, its aromas gaining in richness and complexity.

Intense, powerful and complex, this features heady aromas and flavours of toffee, marzipan, butterscotch and chocolate. Notes of mocha and French roast chime in as well, with a long, glorious finish of dried white fruits and spice - Wine Spectator.

TASTING NOTES:

  • View: Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny is deep amber in colour with russet highlights.
  • Nose: Its superb bouquet is a complex marriage of ripe, plummy, mature fruit, warm spicy overtones of cinnamon and butterscotch and subtle oak nuances.
  • Mouth: Rich and complex, soft and sweet on the palate taste.

APPELLATION: Port

VINEYARD: Located in the Douro Valley, 70 km from the Atlantic coast and the border with Spain. Vineyards cover approximately 28,000 hectares.

GRAPES: Made exclusively with grapes from the Fonseca winery.

AGEING: In oak barrels.

PREPARATION: Every year during the month of January, the winery Fonseca select some of the best Port wines destined for long ageing. The colour of the wine over time tends to change, losing the first clear red hue from the grapes, before gradually turning more and more amber, before turning chestnut honey. White port, usually pale yellow when it is still young, eventually tends to darken and become yellow gold before turning brown.

PAIRINGS: It goes well with desserts, especially chocolate-based desserts, flan, figs, almonds and walnuts. Also enjoyable served cold in summer.

RECOMMENDED SERVING TEMPERATURE: 14-16 °C.

Manoel Pedro Gonçalves Guimaraens and his brother João Gonçalves Salgueiro, established the company in 1822 when they acquired control of the Fonseca and Monteiro Company from the Fonseca Family by purchase of the majority of Fonseca owned shares. A condition of the sale of Fonseca's shares was that the name Fonseca remain as the brand name

NOTE DI DEGUSTAZIONE:

  • Vista: color ambra scuro con riflessi color ruggine.
  • Naso: superbo bouquet formato da un connubio di frutti rossi maturi con calde note speziate di cannella e caramello e tenui sfumature di rovere.
  • Bocca: sapore ricco e complesso, morbido e dolce al palato.

UVE: prodotto esclusivamente con uve della Cantina Fonseca.

INVECCHIAMENTO: Botti di legno di rovere.PREPARAZIONE: Ogni anno, durante il mese di gennaio, la Cantina Fonseca seleziona una parte dei più pregiati vini Porto da destinare a lungo invecchiamento. Il colore del vino nel tempo tende a modificarsi, dapprima si schiarisce perdendo le tonalità rosse proprie dell'uva, assume, poi, un colore sempre più ambrato, tendente al miele di castagno. Il porto bianco, normalmente giallo pallido quando è ancora giovane, col tempo tende a scurire diventando giallo-dorato tendente al castano.

ABBINAMENTO: si accompagna in maniera eccellente ai dessert, soprattutto se a base di cioccolato, alla crème brulée ed è ottimo con fichi, mandorle e noci. Può essere apprezzato da solo, alla fine dei pasti ed è buono anche servito fresco d'estate.
