The Pla i Llevant denomination of origin has been a key factor in the resurgence of the wines from the Balearic Islands. In Majorcan it means “plain” and “east coast” of Mallorca.

It is on the east of the island of Pla i Llevant, and it comprises 18 municipalities. The vineyard covers 335 hectares, which have a total of 17 wineries and 107 wine producers. It is an ideal area for developing wines with a Mediterranean feel.

The climate of the Pla i Llevant DO is Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and mild winters. The wind which comes from the sea benefits the vines. The low soil, optimal for wine production, is reddish (due to iron oxide) and it is formed by limestone rocks that produce limestone-clay soils.

Grape varieties used have changed in these last few years, since strains from abroad have been introduced. These strains are combined with the native ones, such as Fogoneu or Callet. The white varieties used are: Macabeo, Prensal Blanc, Muscat, Chardonnay and Parellada. Red wines are made with these varieties: Callet, Fogoneu, Manto Negro, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
