Before the world recognized Catena's Argentina as "Malbec country", the winery was known for its old-world style Cabernet Sauvignon born in the clay-soils of Agrelo. The family cherishes its historic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Agrelo and Tupungato, particularly for their ageability and classic flavours. Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Lot 3 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 2 of the Domingo vineyard and Lot 2 of the Nicasia Vineyard.

Catena Zapata Alta Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon)
- View: dark ruby with violet tones.
- Nose: intense aromas of ripe raspberries and cassis, hints of pepper and cloves.
- Mouth: rich and full-bodied, layers of cassis and black raspberry, cedar notes, snuff and leather, elegant, silky tannins and a long, lingering finish.
GRAPES: Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
WINEMAKING: Vineyard lots are harvested at different times to ensure optimal natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels. Whole berries are hand loaded into small format fermentation bins and 225-500 L barrels; lots are treated individually; fermentation and maceration last for 16 - 35 days. Wild yeasts. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel.
AGEING: Aged for 18-24 months, depending on the vineyard and harvest time. French oak.
WINE PAIRING: Red meats like steak or lamb.
In 1994, Nicolas and his team were confident they had identified the best lots for growing Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
