In Southern Africa grows a unique indigenous tree called the marula tree. Also known as the elephant tree or the marriage tree, the fruit from this tree is popular throughout the animal kingdom as well as with the people of the region. One marula product that everyone can try and fall in love with is Amarula, a cream liqueur from South Africa.
This spirit was first released in 1983 and since then, its distinctive taste has made it increasingly popular internationally. The marula fruits used as a base are harvested by hand when they are fully ripe and yellow. They must be harvested in the wild since this tree cannot be cultivated. The fruit is then processed into wine, double-distilled, and then left in peace to mature in oak barrels for two whole years. After that maturation process has ended, the wine is mixed with fresh cream and sugar to result in one of the most popular cream liqueurs in the world.
This liqueur tastes like a butterscotch sundae and is delightfully rich, creamy, and silky on the tongue. At just 17 per cent alcohol per volume, Amarula is the perfect spirit to add to your coffee, cocktails, or anything else that needs a bit of flavour. This special liqueur is definitely a must-try.
