Ratzeputz has been made according to a special family recipe since 1877. The original recipe was developed in the Celle region of Germany. Despite beginning as a local drink, Ratzeputz quickly gained fame and regular consumers all over the world. Its warming properties have even been used by polar explorers as a manner to fight the cold and warm their bones.

The main ingredient in this historic schnapps is ginger root. Ginger has been used for centuries as a medicinal aid. It is one of the healthiest spices on the planet, benefitting both the body and the brain as well as having a noted soothing effect on the stomach. The high-quality ginger that is used to craft Ratzeputz offers warmth to the final blend while the high alcohol content serves to bring out the ginger's lemony side.

At 58% alcohol per volume, Ratzeputz carries a kick, but its strong and delicate ginger flavour will keep you coming back for more. This traditional German spirit is perfect to offer as a gift or as a member of your own collection. The stomach-soothing properties of the ginger make this the perfect digestive drink to enjoy after a heavy lunch or dinner. It is also great to enjoy alone, on ice.

Ratzeputz

TASTING NOTES:

  • Colour: Ratzeputz has a mid-amber colour.
  • Aroma: Intense and rich bouquet, charged with fresh herbal fragrances and a hint of ginger.
  • Taste: Fresh sensations invade the palate, with citrus notes of lemon, and a hint of spicy ginger.

PRODUCER: C. W. Baland & Langebartels.

COUNTRY: Germany.

PRODUCTION DETAILS: Amazing German liqueur spirit. It is catalogued as a schnapps, although the alcohol content is definitely higher than the usual schnapps that can be found in the local liqueur store. The history of this spirit date back to 1877, and it was a much stronger concoction back then. With the passing years, and the expansion to different markets, the craftsmen mellowed it down to a 58%, which is still worthy of some caution. For the creation of this spirit, the selected herbs are macerated to the finest in order to obtain the maximum amount of aromaticity and flavour from the extracts. Combined with herbal distillates and root extracts that have remained a secret up to this date, and with ginger as the main ingredient, this liqueur surely develops a strong and spicy character. Due to its herbal nature and the medicinal qualities of ginger, Ratzeputz works perfectly as a digestive after a heavy meal, although it is quite popular for its medicinal effects on minor stomach issues such as acidity, nausea, or ulcers.
