Grappa has been produced in Italy since at least the middle of the 14th century. It started as a way to ensure that every bit of sugar in the grapes was used after winemaking. It is hard to say exactly where the word grappa itself comes from, but it has managed to work its way into the international vocabulary. What began as a traditional beverage invented as a way to not waste a bit of precious grape is now a beverage enjoyed around the world.
From the world of fine Italian grappas comes Julia Grappa Superiore. This is an unaged grappa made using a collection of different grapes from northeastern Italy. After the stalks and stems are removed, these solid grape leftovers, known as pomace, are distilled twice in copper stills to result in a crystal-clear grappa. The use of a blend of different varieties of grape gives this grappa a more rounded flavour.
The delicate aroma of this mature grappa will rise to greet you upon opening the bottle. When it is well-chilled, Julia Grappa Superiore makes the perfect aperitif to prepare the stomach for the meal that awaits it. It is also traditionally served as an after-meal digestive drink or added to an espresso to give it that extra kick that only grappa can achieve.

PRODUCTION DETAILS: This unaged grappa is a distillate made from grape-based pomace, which contains everything remaining after the winemaking process, including seeds, stalks, and stems. Grappa Julia Superiore uses a selection of different grape varieties from northeastern Italy. Batch distillation of pomace in copper stills is followed by a refinement in column stills. Best served at room temperature, as an ideal after-dinner digestif. Combine with hot espresso coffee, Italian-style, to create the stimulating and cleansing beverage known as a Caffè Corretto. Or you might adopt a tradition from the Veneto region known as resentin, or little rinser: after finishing a sweetened cup of espresso, pour a few drops of grappa into the almost empty cup, swirl, and drink down in one.
