You will like to know that…

Bathtub Gin, made by Ableforth's in the UK, is an award-winning gin that is all about the flavour. While most spirits nowadays are made using distillation, Bathtub Gin is made using cold compounding. This means that Ableforth's receives a high-quality copper pot distilled gin made with botanicals from their partners at Langley Distillery. This gin is then infused with more flavours until it is perfect.

The cold compounding method used to make Bathtub Gin means that each batch is unique and that the fresh, vibrant botanical flavours of orange peel, cassia, juniper, coriander, cardamom, and cloves can really shine through. Infusing the gin with flavours is more difficult to control than the method that most producers use of infusing before distillation. The length of Bathtub Gin's cold compounding is controlled entirely by sampling.

Not only does Bathtub Gin offer the freshest and truest botanical delivery possible, but every bottle is also wrapped, strung, and waxed by hand. The label looks as though it has come straight out of a Victorian apothecary. That personal touch shows the love of their craft at Ableforth's. Try this gin with tonic or by mixing it in the cocktail of your choice. Pair it with spiced desserts which are not overwhelmingly sweet. On the savoury side, Bathtub Gin would go well with strong cheeses, spicy foods, patés, and cucumber sandwiches.

Description of Bathtub Gin

Bathtub Gin

TASTING NOTE:

  • Colour: Bathtub Gin is clear
  • Nose: A rich bouquet of juniper initially stale is supported by a solid backbone of a rich grain brandy. High notes of cardamom and orange blossom are evident with only a hint of cinnamon.
  • Mouth: the initial focus is on juniper, but earthy botanicals are also known in the beginning. The mouthfeel is exceptionally viscous and creamy. Finish: The juniper falls and gives way to cardamom and cinnamon, with a late resurgence of orange peel.

BRAND: Professor Cornelius Ampleforths

PREPARATION: Produced using the traditional cold capitalization method (or in simple terms - the infusion). Very high-quality copper still that is impregnated with ingredients including juniper, orange peel, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom.

TASTING NOTES:

  • Colour: Bathtub Gin is a transparent, slightly-golden-coloured spirit.
  • Aroma: This is a heavy-weight champion gin, on the nose, showing notes of juniper, cinnamon, cardamom, orange, lemon and lime one after another.
  • Taste: The palate is more discrete from the nose. It is quite fresh, smooth and elegant with a specific flavour profile. It starts quite neutral and then builds up to notes of cinnamon, orange and juniper all at once. Once they fade, notes of forest and clove appear. The finish shows cinnamon and orange once again and does not let those two go for a long time.

PRODUCER: Ableforths.

COUNTRY: United Kingdom

PRODUCTION DETAILS: The production of Bathtub Gin is done in a couple of steps. The first distillation is done in copper pots, using the pot-still distillation process. The first distillation is done with juniper, coriander and some other botanicals. After that, a portion of gin is infused with fresh botanicals and then left for a week to stabilize. This way the aroma and flavour intensity of the second group of botanicals can actually influence the spirit, without the distillation there to minimize their effect. In the end the bottling process takes place without any prior filtration.
