The Winery

La Scolca

La Scolca

The La Scolca® estate was purchased between 1917 and 1919 by the great-grandfather of the current owner, Giorgio Soldati, who today leads the company together with the Chiara Soldati glia, the fifth generation with an eye already at the third millennium. The past and the future coexist in this company that best combines the naturalness of those who live in this world with the speed of those who look forward with the vision of courageous captains: never as in the case of the Soldati family names have a meaning symbolic. The name of the plot derives from the ancient toponym "Sfurca" or "Looking far away" and the farmhouse that once stood there had been a lookout post in the past. The surname fully reflects the heroic and tenacious character of the owners and their wines.

The name La Scolca comes from the name "Sfurca" which means lookout point. In the past there was a farm on the land of La Scolca that served as a lookout. The name La Scolca is synonymous worldwide with Gavi, a superior dry white wine from Piedmont. In the period 1917-1919 the estate comes into the possession of the Soldati family. Today it is Giorgio Soldati who runs the domain together with his daughter Chiara, already the fifth generation. This makes La Scolca the oldest wine company in the region that is still run by one and the same family. The wines of La Scolca are internationally acclaimed by many stars and the Gavi dei Gavi "Black Label" is even the house wine of Queen Elizabeth.

In the glass, this Gavi Black Label from La Scola is pale yellow. In the nose we smell intense fruity and floral notes. The minerality sprays the glass. In the mouth we taste a medium bodied wine. Fresh with a beautiful acidity with notes of almonds and hazelnut. The wine is very elegant. This is of course a nice wine with fish, paella and oysters, but in our opinion it is also a nice 'enjoy wine' with a good conversation.

Black Label. House wine from Queen Elizabeth, queen of a runaway island. She finds her peace of mind in this Gavi. Read about their silent wine at the Gold and the Villa, add many euros and then decide if you want to drink like a queen. Fine blossoming bianco, mineral acids, pears peeled with a white golden knife. How come he doesn't score much higher than his simpler family members? In the price category around forty euros, competition is strong. Harold Hamersma in De Grote Hamersma 2017, rated with an 8.5

La Scolca ranks among the top white wine producers in Italy and it was the Soldati family who first produced quality Gavi from the Cortese grape.

Forget what you may have tasted before, known throughout the world, Black Label Gavi is pale straw yellow in colour with delicate greenish highlights. Intense lemon citrus fruit with floral and flinty notes on the nose.

Medium bodied, with apple and more citrus fruit on the palate with notes of almond and hazelnuts. C

We drank a pair of bottles of La Scolca Gavi Dei Gavi Black Label 2018 with my friend.
I especially liked the colour. Perfume of white flowers: jasmine, lilies .... Astringent, rough taste.
Accompanied with a mushroom risotto.

I got it cheaper at Uvinum.
The usual color, a little bit dark. Clearly noticeable aromas of white fruits. I felt it alive and fresh.

I shared this wine with my family.
The La Scolca Gavi Dei Gavi Etichetta Nera Gavi has a golden yellow colour. Aromas of pear and banana. Very light.
This wine from La Scolca goes well with any meal, to cap it off.
