“An assemblage of ancient grapes of mascalese nerello coming from different vineyards situated at different altitudes on the northern side of Etna. In general, the highest Contrade lie on more gravelly soils with a larger grain, while the lower ones on finer and deeper soils composed of older lava flows, now oxidized and reduced to lava powder. This wine concentrates the characteristics of different terroirs in a single bottle to offer a global idea of a territory.”
“The Etna salt through layers of colder air until most of the Dolomites; this air every night slips along the black powder to the vineyards and subjects them to a rush that first paralyzes them, then have distilled sugars and aromas altered, distorted, that is diverted from what would be the normal metabolism of a Sicilian plant. It 'an advantage to make wine in this place that betrays the common meteorology and lives enclosed in the climatic oddity, is a virgin place and the desert where reign powerful images that are outside forces unnamed. These images are courting for years without being out of everything, but can transmit a way through the winemaking and viticulture, in viniFRANCHETTIIl Franchetti is the flagship wine of the Passopisciaro estate, a super-Etna produced from grapes of Petit Verdot and Cesanese d'Affile planted on the rock and volcanic ash in Contrada Guardiola. The plants were planted in the early 2000s soon after the purchase of the estate by Andrea Franchetti, with a sixth high density system, 90cm x 90cm and more than 10 000 plants per hectare. When he arrived on Etna, Andrea Franchetti had in mind a wine that was more dense and concentrated than they were light and delicate wines produced with native grapes. Therefore, while the wines produced with Nerello Mascalese represent the wine of the area with their unique expression of terroir, the Franchetti is a producer of wine that expresses and represents the idea of wine and the personal vision of one man. To get the result we had in mind, Andrea Franchetti planted Petit Verdot, late varieties of Bordeaux and Cesanese d'Affile, aromatic variety of Lazio, which has helped save from extinction. Because of the volcanic soil, Petit Verdot becomes more spicy and peposo, and standing up in the body, but always with great structure. The Cesanese d'Affile however, more delicate and aromatic, is the counterpart to the Petit Verdot, keeping intact the great potential of aging. The year 2005 was the first vintage produced. The result is a strong concentration, black as the lava and volcanic smoke arising from Etna. Andrea Franchetti describes how the wine that comes from trying to make a completely different wine Etna, to express what is my idea of a Etneo wine. The assembly changes every year depending on the year and the results obtained in the vineyard, do not follow predetermined recipes or formulas, only the taste and the interpretation of the manufacturer. The screws are subjected to a careful selection of grapes, leaving only five fruits per plant, it follows a vinification in steel, with malolactic fermentation and aging in new barrels of French oak. The style of Andrea Franchetti is evident in all its wines and all vintages year after year translates into wines of great richness, depth and complexity that are the distinctive traits of its production.”
“Etna Rosso Passorosso Passopisciaro the winery comes from vineyards located at different altitudes, in Malpasso districts, Guardiola, Holy Spirit, and Favazzo Arcuria, on the northern slope of Etna. It is obtained entirely from grapes Nerello Mascalese, gathered around the second half of October. Fermentation takes place for 15 days in stainless steel tanks. Following aging of approximately 18 months in large oak barrels. In the glass it has a bright ruby red color. The nose gives off elegant hints of citrus and red fruits, which during its evolution give way to aromas of camphor, sandalwood and spices. The palate is crisp and fruity, pleasant smoothness and persistence. Perfect in the first meat sauce company, it goes well with roasts and stews.”
“Gradually picked from vineyards on the flank of the vulcano, starting with the lowest, at 500 mt. a.s.l. and finishing at 1000 mt, at Guardiola. The wine is kind and young and very subtle; its powers are hidden; time in bottle will be bringing them out for a long time.”
