  • View: Meandro 2016 has a lively red hue.

VINEYARD: F. Olazabal & Filhos at vineyard Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the most respected estates in the Douro. It is run by married couple Francisco Olazabal and Maria Luisa Nicolau de Almeida, both descended from lines of quality winemakers. It is located on the upstream meander of the River Douro, which almost surrounds the estate, with vines on gentle slopes, and also produces fine olive oils.

GRAPES: 40% Touriga Franca, 30% Touriga Nacional, 20% Tinta Roriz, 5% Tinta Barroca, 3% Alicante Bouschet, 2% Tinta Amarela

AGEING: 14 months in second and third year French Allier oak barriques.

PREPARATION: It is rare that a wine has its name shortened to one word, in the same way that the biggest stars like Madonna or Einstein are known by one name. Meandro is one such exception, a shining star in the wine firmament. Due to excellent September weather without fear of rain, a calm harvest at the ideal point of maturation was possible. Following crushing and cooling, the grapes were trodden by foot for four hours in granite lagares then placed in small refrigerated stainless steel vinifying vats, each grape variety being vinified separately.

PAIRING: Red meat, game, hearty dishes.

Quinta do Vale Meão

In 1877 D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, already owner of the largest agricultural heritage of the Douro, bought in a public auction 300 hectares of virgin land to the VN chamber of Foz Côa. Her dream was to build from scratch a model exploration, materializing in her all the vast experience...

Meandro 2016

The Quinta do Vale do Meão is the flagship of one of Portugal's best wineries. The wine is a blend of the original Portuguese grapes Touriga Nacional 58%, 35% Touriga Franca, 5% and 2% Tinta Barroca Tinta Roriz which (using 80% new, overife for the 2nd time) for 18 months in French barriques. This is a wine that has great balance and very elegant. Nothing is too much or too overbearing and the Wine Advocate speaks also about the "wow moment" at Quinta do Vale do Meão. This wine is simply irresistible. The wine has a complex nose with many aromatic nuances without overlapping with another odor. Red fruit, leather, espresso, hint of tobacco and spices we smell in the nose. The wine is medium to full bodied with an excellent (read: not dominant) integration of wood. Now everyone goes to compare this wine is a bit lame but it's best to compare it with a good, elegant Burgundian who freshness and elegance can let go together. The Meao stood in the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2014 of the world's best wines in the top 3!

The estates from D. Antónia Ferreira, aka Ferreirinha, are probably the most emblematic across the Dourovalley and this estate Quinta do Vale Meão as enormous symbolism, since it was the last of its acquisitions, was a project idealized from the beginning by D. Antónia. Quinta do Vale Meão remained still in the hands of his descendants, the winemaker Francisco Olazabal, to take the lead and the entire possession of this estate in 1994. The wine Quinta do Vale Meão in the inaugural harvest of 1999 was considered, by quality, one of the greatest wines in Douro.

16,5 pts Revista de Vinhos - It presents a ruby dark colour, of great saturation. Very expressive nose, full of ripe berries. It lets the acidity guess gentle tracks of tropicality and green olive. In the mouth, intense and quite definite passion fruit — that quickly is tinged in wild fruits, full of freshness. The alcohol is very well integrated.
