Elaboration of Meandro 2016
Meandro 2016 (Sousao, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz)
- View: Meandro 2016 has a lively red hue.
- Nose: Floral and luscious red fruit aromas.
- Mouth: A bold and simply magnificent balance between fruit, oak, and acidity. Intense fruit notes lead to a long, complex finish with a fresh aftertaste.
VINEYARD: F. Olazabal & Filhos at vineyard Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the most respected estates in the Douro. It is run by married couple Francisco Olazabal and Maria Luisa Nicolau de Almeida, both descended from lines of quality winemakers. It is located on the upstream meander of the River Douro, which almost surrounds the estate, with vines on gentle slopes, and also produces fine olive oils.
GRAPES: 40% Touriga Franca, 30% Touriga Nacional, 20% Tinta Roriz, 5% Tinta Barroca, 3% Alicante Bouschet, 2% Tinta Amarela
AGEING: 14 months in second and third year French Allier oak barriques.
PREPARATION: It is rare that a wine has its name shortened to one word, in the same way that the biggest stars like Madonna or Einstein are known by one name. Meandro is one such exception, a shining star in the wine firmament. Due to excellent September weather without fear of rain, a calm harvest at the ideal point of maturation was possible. Following crushing and cooling, the grapes were trodden by foot for four hours in granite lagares then placed in small refrigerated stainless steel vinifying vats, each grape variety being vinified separately.
PAIRING: Red meat, game, hearty dishes.
RECOMMENDED SERVING TEMPERATURE: 16-18°C
How to serve
In 1877 D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, already owner of the largest agricultural heritage of the Douro, bought in a public auction 300 hectares of virgin land to the VN chamber of Foz Côa. Her dream was to build from scratch a model exploration, materializing in her all the vast experience accumulated throughout her life as a businesswoman from Douro.More about the Winery
