Description of Altano Reserva 2016

Altano Reserva 2016 (Touriga Nacional)

TASTING NOTES:

  • View: Altano Reserva 2016 has a deep, red colour.
  • Nose: Complex bouquet charged with aromas of blackberries, flowers, dark chocolate, and spices.
  • Mouth: Full body on the palate with well-balanced flavours, chewy tannins, and notes of cedar, vanilla, blackberries, plum, and dates. The finish is long and lingering.

APPELLATION: Douro

VINEYARD: Altano. From the Douro Valley in Portugal, this family-owned vineyard has over 130 years of history and five generations of experience in the art of extracting the best of the soil to create wonderful wines. Individual vineyards and sustainable practices, and the bold decision to produce Douro wines form the same vineyards that have historically produced great Ports, have positioned this hose as one of the finest winemakers in the country.

GRAPES: Touriga Nacional.

AGEING: Twelve months of ageing in American oak barrels prior to bottling.

PREPARATION: The grapes are carefully harvested and selected, and transported to the cellar in small, shallow boxes to preserve the integrity of each grape. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks of 9 and 15 tons of capacity, in a temperature-controlled process between 26° and 28°C. The wine is then aged until it reaches the desired state, and then it is bottled for consumption.

PAIRING: This red is perfect to accompany strong meals, such as grilled meat, and roasted beef.

RECOMMENDED SERVING TEMPERATURE: 14-17°C

- Wonderfully aromatic. Lovely perfume with some vanilla, violets and lavender.
- Rich and plummy on the palate, showing dark chocolate, hints of mocha and pepper, underscored by polished tannins.
- Ready to drink, ideally a year or so after bottling. Develops favourably in bottle for a number of years.
- An excellent match with red meats and game dishes, as well as a varied cheese platter.
- Quinta do Ataide, the largest of the Symington family's three Vilarica Valley vineyards in the Douro Superior with 82 hectares (203 acres) under vine. Approximately one quarter is planted with Touriga Nacional. The vineyard was planted in the late 1970s, early 1980s and the vines have now reached an ideal state of maturity.
- 100% Touriga Nacional. The most emblematic of Portugal's grape varieties, it is particularly well suited to the hot and dry conditions of the Vilarica Valley. Touriga Nacional lends itself to producing single varietal wines, owing to its rich aromatic range, generous fruit, and the powerful tannins that underscore its longevity.

16,5 pts Vinho Grandes Escolhas - Deep red colour. Intense and complex aromas of flowers and ripe blackberry fruits, chocolate and spices. In the mouth it's round and full bodied. Broad and well balanced with a long and persistent end of mouth.

It is not necessary to pair this Altano Reserva with food, on the contrary. A discovery I made with one of my best friends.
Wonderful cherry colour and high layer. Smells like chocolate. Fresh and fruity on the palate.
