“Sogrape Vinhos was founded in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes, with the ambition of making Portuguese wines known throughout the world and a long-term vision based on the marketing of quality wines. Sogrape entered the Dão region in 1957 by acquiring the share capital of the sociedade Vinícola do Super Dão winery, now called the Vinícola do Vale do Dão where it started to produce the then recently-launched (and soon to be hugely successful) Dão from Grão Vasco, in addition to Reserva Dão ("Dão Pipas"). Then it fell to Sogrape Vinhos to take on a pioneering technical modernisation role, enhancing and encouraging plantings of the noble regional varieties and restoring the Dão wines' reputation for quality. An activity that would intensify when, following a fire that completely destroyed the Vinícola do Vale do Dão premises, in 1988 Sogrape decided to invest in acquiring Quinta dos Carvalhais. Here the company runs an innovative project that has revolutionized the region and represented a milestone in Dão viti-viniculture.”
