The Winery
Domaine de la Janasse

Because of its exploded structure (more than sixty parcels), the La Janasse estate extends over a mosaic of terroirs (see illustration). Careful study and research on soils, their exposure and microclimates has made it possible to ideally organize the vineyard. White grapes and Syrah are planted preferably on sand-limestone soils and exposed northeast, to preserve freshness, acidity and finesse.Mourvèdres planted on clay-limestone soils covered with rolled pebbles get a very good level of maturity.
More about the Winery
The young Christophe Sabon is very enthusiastic about this. He took over the domain from his father in the early 1990s and, as so often, the development has been extremely positive since then. Christophe cultivates a total of more than 15 hectares of vineyard, all on a very difficult surface of pebble, sand and large boulders. The sticks are more than 40 years old, in some plots there are sticks over 80 years old.
The variety of different grapes is very large, including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Carignan, Bourboulenc, Counoise. Low yields, often less than 30 hl / ha., Are achieved through merciless pruning and rigorous vendange distance. Christophe also works almost exclusively organically. The grapes are picked entirely by hand, before fermentation, the grapes are lightly bruised, followed by a long maceration of about 18 days. After temperature-controlled fermentation, the wines remain on large oak casks. All wines are made classically and excel through the combination of strength and finesse.
Janasse's Côtes du Rhône is a blend of 40% Grenache supplemented with Mourvèdre, Carignan, Syrah and Cinsault is another beautiful vintage. The wine is medium-bodied, juicy and peppery with spices, but also fresh. A very distinctive wine and exactly as a good Cote du Rhone should be, but we can leave that to Domaine Janasse.
