You will like to know that…
In the 17th century, a woman fled her home country of Spain. All that she took on that trip with her was a pair of earrings and a secret recipe. The recipe that she carried with her was for a coffee-based liqueur that was destined to take the world by storm: Tia Maria. After centuries kept either carefully guarded or lost to time, Dr Kenneth Leigh Evans found the recipe for Tia Maria in the 1940s. He then began to produce this remarkable coffee-flavoured spirit and selling it around the world.
The most important ingredient in Tia Maria is coffee. This freshly roasted coffee is what gives the final product both its flavour and enticing aroma. The perfect counterpart for this fine coffee is Madagascar vanilla. This high-quality vanilla gives a depth of flavour and a more rounded bouquet. The final touch is Jamaican rum. This Caribbean rum centres Tia Maria and gives it a firm base to rest on.
Open a bottle of Tia Maria and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee will gently work its way towards your nose. This liqueur is the perfect addition to the ever-popular - and infinitely delicious - espresso martini. Tia Maria is equally delicious as a sipping spirit, mixed into cocktails or coffees, or used in cooking. Thank goodness that secret recipe survived the trip!

- Aroma: On the nose, the scent of dark coffee beans will stand out more than anything else. Hints of vanilla and sugar help to sweeten the scent profile.
- Taste: Just like with the smells of this beverage, the primary flavours include that of coffee beans and vanilla.
PRODUCER: The story of Tia Maria goes back to the 18th century, in Jamaica. Rumor has it that a woman moved from Jamaica to Europe, carrying the recipe for Tia Maria with her. The recipe was lost for centuries until it was rediscovered by Dr. Kenneth Evans in the early 1900s. He then started reproducing and selling the drink in the 1940's. However, the company is now owned by the Chivas Brothers Distillery, in COUNTRY: Italy.
COUNTRY: COUNTRY: Italy.
PRODUCTION DETAILS: Tia Maria does not give away its distilling secrets. However, we do know that the base of this drink is made with Jamaican rum. The additional flavourings come from roasted coffee made from Jamaican coffee beans. A hint of Madagascan vanilla adds a bit of extra sweetness as well. As with most liqueurs, this tastes best when used in mixed drinks. Any coffee flavoured beverages, like a White Russian, will taste great when Tia Maria is used.
