Senior Blanco, Montalvo Lara, and the Alvarez brothers had the idea to take Arabica coffee and turn it into a delicious spirit. In Mexico in 1936, the brainchild of these four friends resulted in the coffee-flavoured liqueur known and loved around the world: Kahluá. The world Kahlúa has ties to ancient Arabic. Some even say it is slang for coffee. In the 1940s, Kahlúa made its way north to the USA, and it is all history from there.
To make one single bottle of Kahlúa, it can take up to seven years. This is because it takes six years alone for the coffee to ripen on the tree. As the coffee for Kahlúa is grown in the shade, it thus takes longer to mature. When the beans are harvested, they have to rest for six months in burlap sacks. In the meantime, sugarcane is harvested and its juice is extracted to be boiled and mixed with water to make rum. Once this is distilled, it is ready to meet the coffee. The perfectly roasted coffee is allowed to marry this high-quality rum for four weeks before bottling.
