In 1820, Jean Buton, the son of a couple of distillers from Charente, the home of Cognac, arrived in Bologna with the idea of expanding the family business to Italy. Together with Giacomo Rovazzi, he founded Gio. Buton SPA, the oldest Italian spirits distillation company. Impressed by the characteristics of local grapes, Buton chose the Trebbiano Bianco variety to produce what was to become his flagship product. Buton's stand, completely decorated in Art Nouveau style, won the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. From that moment on, the company became internationally famous, thanks also to the marketing work of the new owner Filippo Sassoli De' Bianchi. In 1939, the brandy officially took the name of Vecchia Romagna Brandy Etichetta Nera and went down in history.
