In the south of Spain, there is a special microclimate which is perfect for the crafting of brandy. Here, in Andalusia, at the southernmost point of Europe, lies the triangular Jerez region, bordered on two sides by rivers and by the Atlantic Ocean on the third. Named after the King of Spain who reigned from 1516 to 1556, Carlos I is an excellent representative for the fine brandies that make the Jerez region so famous.
To make Carlos I, Airén and Palomino grapes are distilled in old pot stills before being aged in the best American oak casks available. But, the true secret behind this successful spirit is the special Criaderas and Solera ageing system. The more mature distillates, known as Solera, are mixed with the younger Criaderas distillates to allow the aromas and flavours of the older wines to be passed on to their younger siblings. This is how Osborne, founded in 1772, has been able to keep the character and personality of Carlos I intact.
Deep and complex, this brandy flows like liquid amber in the glass, leaving traces of vanilla, cocoa, and orange on the palate. It is perfect to enjoy on the rocks, but it equally delicious when used in cocktails. Try pairing Carlos I with venison, fish, or strong cheeses on the savoury side. It is perfect for pairing with rich desserts.
