The Glasgow-based company Whyte & Mackay can trace its roots back to 1844. This company has steadily grown over time and has gathered distilleries from all around Scotland under its wings to become a great name in the world of Scotch whisky. The company currently offers a self-branded blended Scotch whisky as well as a whisky-based light spirit drink. Each of its distilleries offers its own products as well.

History

Founded in 1844, Whyte & Mackay began with the establishment of a business named Allan & Poynter in Glasgow, Scotland. James Whyte managed that business until he formed a partnership with Charles Mackay. The two men, who were whisky merchants and warehousemen, began to blend their own Scotch whisky and sold it as the “Whyte & Mackay Special”.

After a series of mergers and takeovers over the years, Whyte & Mackay steadily grew in importance and now controls a number of distilleries in the Scotland area. Whyte & Mackay itself was bought by Emperador Distilleries in 2014.

Product Range

The company currently offers two blended whisky expressions under its own name. Special editions are released from time to time as well as versions with longer ageing periods.

  • Whyte & Mackay Blended Scotch Whisky: This classic blend of 41 different whiskies is triple matured to result in a beautiful traditional Scotch whisky.

  • Whyte & Mackay Light Spirit Drink: A ingenious way to enjoy the flavour of Scotch whisky without the high alcohol content, this drink blends Scotch whisky with sherry to craft a lighter offering with just 21.5% alcohol content.
  • In addition to its own blends, Whyte & Mackay owns and controls a number of other brands, which release strong products in their own right.

  • The Dalmore Distillery: This historic distillery produces Highland single malt Scotch whiskies in a wide range of ages and special editions.

  • The Jura Distillery: Offering single malt Scotch whiskies from the Islands region, this distillery offers a great range of unique, smoky whiskies aged in sherry casks for differing periods of time.

  • Fettercairn: This classic Highlands distillery offers its single malt Scotch whiskies in 12, 28, 40, and 50-year-old expressions.

  • Glayva: A blend of aged Scotch whiskies with spices, tangerines, almonds, and honey, this liqueur is distinctive and delicious.

  • Vladivar Vodka: This brand of vodka, distilled in Scotland, is made with 100% pure grain that has been triple distilled. The charcoal filtering makes it extra smooth.
