Pol Roger is a French champagne house that crafts a high-quality line of sparkling wines from the heart of the Champagne region. This small house places top importance on quality, not quantity and is known around the world for the elegance, finesse, and balance of its wines. With the sublime Sir Winston Churchill, the fine line of vintage champagnes and the beautiful non-vintage range, Pol Roger offers a full range of champagnes for all audiences.
Pol Roger was founded in 1849 by Pol Roger, who was just 18 years old at the time. Initially, the company’s name was simply Roger but was changed to Pol Roger in 1899, in honour of its founder. After acquiring its own vineyards in 1855, the brand began to produce and distribute its own sparkling wines, focusing on Brut champagne specifically for the British market.
Pol Roger was named purveyor of champagne to the Royal Family in 1911 and was served at the coronation of George V. The company remains family owned and operated to date.
Pol Roger offers two Champagne lines, non-vintage and vintage, as well as the Sir Winston Churchill vintage release.
In the non-vintage range, all three champagne varieties are aged for a minimum of four years and use a combination of the three Champagne grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. Pol Roger offers a Réserve Brut that is elegant and perfect for any occasion. The Pure Extra Brut is the attempt to offer an authentic expression of the land in which these grapes is grown. The Rich Demi Sec is halfway between sec and demi-sec, perfect for serving alongside sweeter courses.
The brand offers three vintage champagnes. Brut Vintage uses Pinot Noir and Chardonnay aged for seven years. The limited release Blanc de Blancs Vintage uses 100% Chardonnay aged for 7 years. Rosé Vintage takes the recipe for Brut Vintage and adds non-sparkling Pinot Noir before ageing it for six years.
The prestige Sir Winston Churchill release by the brand is in homage to none other than Winston Churchill. It offers the characteristics that Churchill himself looked for in his champagne: mature, robust, and full bodied. Using Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines that were around at the same time as Churchill, this is only made using the best of the best and so is not released every year.
Winston Churchill had Pol Roger champagne for the first time in 1908. After World War II, he began receiving regular cases of his favourite vintages of this champagne. This helped the brand gain popularity in the UK, in return the company named its best vintage champagne after Churchill in 1984.
