The philosophy of the company “The Esporão project began in the Alentejo from an irrepressible desire to make the finest wines. This is the basis of everything we do and something we extend to other products and regions. Everywhere, nature inspires us and helps us to improve. We respect and protect it, building a more promising future."
Herdade do Esporão is located little more than 170 kilometres southeast of Lisbon, nearby the historical city of Reguengos de Monsaraz, in Alentejo. It was founded in 1267.
It boasts all the characteristics of a typically Mediterranean landscape. Here, among the dehesas, olive groves and vineyards, all the characteristics of a Mediterranean landscape can be found.
A total area of over 1,800 hectares, 450 hectares of which are vineyards and around 80 hectares of olive groves. The wide range of temperatures at the Herdade is characteristic of Continental-Mediterranean climates.
There are 194 planted grape varieties, 37 of which are in full production. These 37 fundamental varieties are those best adapted to the Alentejo, the majority having been in the region for many years. They have been pioneers in introducing certain varieties, which have become real calling cards of Alentejo winemaking, grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Verdelho, which have given identity and quality to Alentejo wines. Approaching forty years old, some of these vines are of an age that they can be classified as old vines.
Constructed in 1987, this winery was designed to use gravity tothe maximum and reduce the use of pumps, the distance between the different operations and minimise the effect on the grapes.
