about G.H. Mumm
G. H. Mumm is probably the most famous Champagne producer in the world and is located in Reims, France. The Société G. H. Mumm et Cie belongs to the well-known Pernod Ricard group and is one of the most popular products of Pernod Ricard. Until 2017, products from Mumm were presented to the winner at every Formula 1 victory ceremony to toast with this exceptional product.
Origin of G. H. Mumm
The origins of the Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, go back to the 12th century. As early as 1761, the family-owned a wine production and marketing company based in Cologne (Germany) under the name "P.A.Mumm", the initials and surname of its owner Peter Arnold Mumm. The company owned extensive vineyards in the Rhine Valley, where it produced its own wines.
The Mumm House in France was founded in 1827 by the three German brothers Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp Mumm and the Brühl-born Friedrich Giesler. They named it after their father, the banker and wine merchant Peter Arnold Mumm.
In 1852, Georges Hermann Mumm, son of one of the founders, took over the management of the company, which would from then on be known as G.H.MUMM et Cie. By establishing the Mumm vineyards, he laid the foundations for a business strategy that focused on sparkling wines of the highest quality.
In 1876, Georges Hermann Mumm made a decision that would change the destiny of the house. As a tribute to his most prestigious customers, he had the neck of the bottles of his Cuvée Brut decorated with a red silk ribbon. The decoration was inspired by the red ribbons awarded to those who received the highest distinctions in France: the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis and the Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honor. This red ribbon is still the trademark of Mumm today.
In the 70s, the Canadian beverage company Seagram took over the famous French champagne house in Reims. Seagram sold the champagne brand G in 2001. H. Mumm to Pernod Ricard.
