In the heart of the Scottish Speyside region lies a distillery that is not often talked about: Cardhu Distillery. Even though it might not be as famous as some of its neighbours, this powerhouse has a great history and offers an impressive line of single malt Scotch whiskies from Speyside itself. Now owned by Diageo, this distillery crafts the whiskies that are at the heart of the blends for the world-famous Johnnie Walker.

History

Cardhu Distillery, lying in the middle of Speyside, one of the most important whisky regions in Scotland, was licensed in 1824. It was working long before that though since John and Helen Cumming installed their first still in the area in 1811. This makes sense considering that John had been a whisky smuggler in the past. After setting themselves up in Speyside, John took care of the farm while Helen distilled the whisky, kept it secret, and took care of the household. What may be even more impressive is that Cardhu Distillery is the only one in the world that can say it was pioneered by a woman. Cardhu simply would not be what it is today without the hard work of Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Cumming. Through hard work and constant improvement, the distillery managed to achieve consistent growth. It was bought by John Walker and Sons in 1893, to ensure that the brand would have regular access to the whisky that was and continues to be the backbone of its blends. Cardhu Distillery is now owned by Diageo, who also owns Johnnie Walker.

Product Range

Most of the whisky made at Cardhu Distillery is used in the production of Johnnie Walker’s blended whiskies. Apart from its use in blends, Cardhu does offer its own range of single malt Scotch whiskies.
  • Cardhu Amber Rock: A easy-drinking whisky that offers a wide range of flavours in its amber depths.
  • Cardhu Gold Reserve: Specially selected casks give this a rich texture while remaining mellow enough to serve as an aperitif.
  • Cardhu 12 Years Old: The quintessential product from this distillery, it is remarkably smooth, silky, and delicate.
  • Cardhu 15 Years Old: Elegant and understated, the delicate flavour of this whisky will open up over time.
  • Cardhu 18 Years Old: Calm and collected in its maturity, this rich whisky is made for connoisseurs.
  • Other Relevant Information

In the past, the distillery went by the name “Cardow”, which was officially changed to Cardhu in 1981. The word “Cardhu” (pronounced car-DOO) comes from the Gaelic “Carn Dubh”, which means “black rock”.
