Campo Viejo has a long and proud history that takes us back to the Roman Empire. However, it has just been in the half past century that our name has become synonymous with Rioja wines. From our first vintage –brewed in the former Ortigüela winery in 1959 –to the creation of the famous “Rioja Bottle” in ’61 and the unveiling of our state-of-the-art sustainable winery in 2001, we have been at the forefront of Rioja winemaking.
Campo Viejo: a selection of tradition and forefront
The name "Campo Viejo" comes from the Roman times, when 4th legion soldiers who graduated with honours after achieving victories for the Empire were rewarded with a plot of land in Villar de Arnedo, which then became known as Campus Veteranus.
To speak about Campo Viejo, with its 60 years of history, is to speak of an icon of the Rioja Designation of Origin. Campo Viejo is the first brand to place Rioja wine within the reach of consumers. Today, it has become the best-selling Rioja brand in the world; present in more than 60 countries.
The new winery: a synonym of effectiveness in the elaboration process
For decades, the winery has maintained the energy and the passion that marked Campo Viejo since its inception, but the opening of its new facility in 2001 was a true milestone, as it is the epitome of sustainable architecture. The winery is fully integrated into the landscape and it is respectful of the environment. It is partially underground, to take advantage of natural insulation and maintain a constant temperature throughout the year. It was built in the same colour as the surrounding soil, to lessen its visual impact; with stratified horizontal planes to give visual feeling of less height, etc. To sump up, a world benchmark. Elena Adell, Chief Winemaker of Campo Viejo, defines the winery in her own words: "This fabulous winery provides me with the ideal platform to continue reinforcing the values that have made Campo Viejo a reference in the world of wine." Few winemakers can participate in the design of the winery in which they will work, but Elena was involved from the beginning in the design of the current Campo Viejo winery.
