A real revelation in recent years, Monkey 47 makes one of the most special gins on the market. Made in the Black Forest, most of its ingredients (47 in total) come from the region, but others have been harvested in faraway lands. They give this gin a complex" and **uncommonly harmonious character.
A little bit of history
The origins of Monkey 47 go back to the years following the Second World War. A British Commander of the Royal Air Force, Montgomery Collins, who was stationed in the Black Forest in Germany, decided to create his own gin which he named "Max the Monkey - Schwarzwald Dry Gin" in honour of Max, a monkey he had adopted from the Berlin Zoo, which was undergoing reconstruction at the time.
In 2008, Alexander Stein decided to revive the recipe for this gin, which was found in the 1960s, and founded the Black Forest distillery and Monkey 47 gin.
Quality and know-how
Gin is produced in a traditional way and, at each stage, the concern for perfection is pushed to its extreme. The ingredients are carefully selected and hand-picked (hibiscus, fragrant rush, six varieties of pepper, lemon, etc.). The entire recipe is kept secret. Certain aromatic plants are macerated longer in contact with alcohol before distillation, in order to obtain the most complete aromatic extraction possible. Maturation is then skilfully studied so that the preparation reaches its peak just before bottling. Monkey 47 is a clever combination of local products and exotic flavours.
The house's flagship product, Monkey 47 (which also comes in a sloe version and a mulberry barrel version) has received great acclaim from all over the world. It was voted the world's best gin in 2011, receiving the gold medal at the "Best in Class - Gin Worldwide at the IWSC" in London and the "World Spirits Award" that year.
