Bordeaux Supérieur is a type of wine that is produced throughout the Bordeaux vineyards. Bordeaux is the largest French wine region with an annual production of around 700 million bottles and is home to 10,000 chateaux.
This region is located between three rivers, spread out over more than 105,000 hectares, and has 53 denominations of origin. These figures allow us to get an idea of the importance of this wine region.
Bordeaux Supérieur wine must adhere to higher quality standards than Bordeaux AOC wines. Some of the requirements include 12-month minimum barrel ageing, a minimum 10.5% ABV, higher density vineyards, lower yields, and the use of older vines.
The majority of Bordeaux Superieur are red wines. Like all red Bordeaux wines, Bordeaux Supérieur wines can only be made from the six accepted grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenère. Most wines consist of majority Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
