Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia 2015

2015 was a great year and this certainly explains the high scores (o a.. 97/100 Parker) was a cool year, which makes the wine more elegant with a nice acidity and a lighter color and less "alcoholic" than usual to do. The Sassicaia has good balance and intensity. The bouquet opens slowly delicate aromas of dark fruit and spices integrated build and then reveal a steady force. The mouthfeel delivers freshness and vigor, but all perfectly balanced with a long and silky finish.

Sassicaia is probably the most famous Italian wine in the world, the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta recognized the potential of the Bolgheri area in order to produce wines of extraordinary elegance and structure as the great wines produced in Bordeaux. Bolgheri is a very particular terroir: close to the sea and soils of a particular composition making it an incredible place for the production of wine grapes. In Bolgheri they are cultivated international varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that  in this area are expressed as well as in no other place in Italy  creating legendary wines like Sassicaia, thus justifying their price. The harvest begin around the beginning of September and last for about three weeks waiting for the right degree of phenolic ripening of the grapes. Once the grapes are manually harvested a bunch selection on a vibrating table is performed before being de-stemmed and conveyed in stainless steel tanks for the alcoholic fermentation. This process takes place in about 10 days which are followed to another 5-8 days of post-fermentative maceration. The  polyphenols in the skins of   are disclosed in wine enriching the taste and the flavor profile. After fermentation the skins are separated from the wine, and it is conveyed in French oak barrels for about 24 months of aeging before blending and bottling. Sassicaia rests in the cellar for 6 months before release.

Marchesi Incisa Della Rocchetta Bolgheri Sassicaia Sassicaia 2015

Tenuta San Guido, in the twenties, a student in Pisa, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a classy wine. His ideal, as the aristocracy of the time, it was Bordeaux. So he describes in a letter to the Veronelli 11/06/1974. "... the experiment origin dates back to the years between 1921 and 1925, when a student at Pisa and a frequent guest of the Dukes Salviati in Migliarino, I drank a wine from their vineyard on Mount Vecchiano who had the same unmistakable "bouquet" of an old Bordeaux I just tasted more than drunk, (because at 14 I was allowed to drink wine) before 1915, at the home of my grandfather Chigi. "Having established with his wife Clarice in Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast, he experimented with several French grape varieties (whose cuttings he had recovered from the estate of the Dukes Salviati in Migliarino, and not from France) and concluded that the Cabernet had "the bouquet I was looking for." No one had ever thought of doing a "Bordeaux" wine in Maremma, an unknown area under wine point of view. The decision to plant this variety in the Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similarity that he had noticed in this area of Tuscany and Graves, Bordeaux. Graves means gravel, stony ground for distinguishing the area, just like Sassicaia, in Tuscany, an area calls with the same characteristics. From 1948 to 1967, Sassicaia it remained strictly private domain, and was drunk only at the estate.

The Sassicaia Bolgheri Tenuta San Guido was born in vineyards located in the beautiful Tuscan Maremma landscape. It is produced mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes, harvested between the beginning of September and the first week of October. The process of vinification, at a controlled temperature of 30-31 ° C, consists in 2 weeks of maceration with frequent pumping and delestages, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. The wine then matures in French oak barrels for 24 months and then aged in glass before being placed on the market. The Bolgheri Sassicaia is characterized by an intense ruby red color and deep. The bouquet is seductive and elegant and opens with rich, ripe aromas of red fruits, blueberry, black currant and cassis, enriched by fine notes of Mediterranean scrub, juniper, laurel and myrtle, evolving into spicy fragrances and balsamic notes. The taste is sharp and focused, with a rich spiciness and chocolate sensations, vanilla, china and fern, balanced by a vegetable touch that gives freshness. Overall it is a wine of great elegance, with fine and soft tannins. Perfect to accompany dishes and game, especially wild boar, it is perfect in combination with large roasts.

It is a characteristic of Sassicaia to expect great results even in these less celebrated vintages. And this tendency was even more reinforced in the last decade. Sassicaia is intense, concentrated and deep ruby colour. Very complex and elegant on the nose, with scents of red fruits. Strong, concentrated, with sweet and balanced tannins on the palate. Very long finish with very important organoleptic and poliphenolic aspects, which will ensure to this wine an extraordinary longevity.

Just drunk. Nothing to say, wine perfect with no defects.
Not worth the cost, however. Absolutely not good value for money. With that money you can buy other wines. Price is right for me 60 euro.
