Winter is here: the 5 best wines for the lowest temperatures

by Marta

We cannot leave home without a coat and this does not look like it will improve for another few months. We have to prepare ourselves for the cold and what it is best for that is to gather some good wines to warm us from the inside. Needless to say that it is much better to buy them online, because then we avoid the fight against the elements while we save some time we can dedicate to other issues…

Today I will recommend 5 red wines that seem ideal for those nice afternoons and long dinners that are the best thing about winter. I’ll start with one that I love, and everyone who has tried it at my house also liked: Absum Varietales 2008.

This wine from Somontano region surprises because of the mastery with which combines the power while showing a perfect balance in its proportion of wood and fruit. It also has the advantage of having a completely affordable price, which makes it easy for us to think about it as one of the possible candidates for the upcoming Christmas holidays. I have already commissioned some boxes, because I know they will not see 2013.

It is not to fly the flag for my land (ok, not only), but my next proposal is another Somontano: Enate. This is a famous, experienced and very well known to all wine which is also excellent for saving, if anyone can resist having the bottle and not to uncork it.

The next 2 proposals are fully linked to my culinary background. I cannot imagine the winter without stews, powerful casseroles, game dishes and lamb barbecues that cannot but be accompanied by a good nap. To enjoy the full experience, as I see it, you have to go for some Ribera del Duero classic cut.

And as today it goes in pairs, I will propose two of them: Pesquera Crianza 2009 and Tomás Postigo Crianza 2009, both crianza. What a sensation. This will really become a loving sweet home which will help us get ready for the real cold.

Finally, a signature wine from La Rioja. Its price is higher than the rest of my suggestions, but the wine itself is equally rich, at least. I discovered it this summer in a very nutritious walk down Laurel Street in Logroño and since then I cannot take it off of my head.

Baigorri de Garage 2007 is a tasty wine with an elegant and persistent finish. Its alcohol content (14%) differentiates it from other Rioja wines and helps us make that difference that is noticeable from the first contact. Its secret: strictly selected grapes coming from very old vines.
